The Harlem Renaissance: Before the Beyond | Lynn Berkowitz
Wednesdays 10:00 am – 11:30 am
February 7, 14, 21

From early 19th century creators, like Edmonia Lewis and Henry Ossawa Tanner, and the 20th century phenomenon known as the Harlem Renaissance, to contemporaries of today like Kehinde Wiley and MacArthur Fellow Jordan Casteel, Black figurative artists continue to energize and embolden the art world on a grand scale. We will explore select examples of modern and contemporary art, and their links to earlier breakthrough paintings, to consider how bold innovations found new outlets. Enjoy this artful conversation that includes an introduction to the Harlem Renaissance and the positive influence of The Rosenwald Fund which provided the means for travel and learning experiences for Black artists and the Harmon Foundation that generated exhibition opportunities. Images will be drawn from museums near and far and short videos will foster new ways of looking at art.

Lynn Berkowitz, MFA, BFA, with a career in art museums and online learning, has developed an array of award-winning gallery tours, experiences, and apps aimed at helping audiences of all ages and abilities engage with a diversity of art ‘isms and approaches.

Women Artists Connected to Philly | Lynn Berkowitz
Wednesdays 10:00 am – 11:30 am
March 6, 13, 20

Philadelphia has been, and remains, rich in resources that provide stellar academic training in art, as well as opportunities for exhibiting and viewing art. The City’s sites have been instrumental in carving out arenas for women to gain access to the field and to flourish. From painting and sculpture to illustration and design, Philly has been a hotbed of arts learning and leading on the national and international stage. We will explore an array of 19th to 21st century women artists working in myriad styles ranging from Realism and Pennsylvania Impressionism to the most astonishing of contemporary art. Learn about the importance of the Philadelphia Ten, an evolving group of painters and sculptors that exhibited together for nearly thirty years, the impact of significant teachers, and the force of new emerging directions. Images will be drawn from museums near and far and short videos will foster new ways of looking at art.
