Artist Talk for Art Behind Bars w/ Rosalie Guzofsky

Abington Art Center is proud to host this artist talk with Art Behind Bars’ exhibition curator, and AAC Executive Director, Rosalie Guzofsky. Art Behind Bars brings together the work of Michael Vandergrift, Luis Lopez, Brian Witham, and Josue Benitez, four incarcerated individuals serving sentences for serious crimes at the Federal Correctional Complex in Terre Haute, Indiana. Working within the profound physical and psychological constraints of incarceration, they have each found in art a space for expression, reflection, and possibility.

This exhibition is ultimately not about redemption, nor is it an argument about innocence. It is about the human capacity to create meaning under extraordinarily difficult circumstances. At its core, Art Behind Bars speaks to Abington Art Center’s belief that art can provide a personal path toward connection, reflection, and transformation. These four artists have found such a path in a place defined by confinement. Their work asks us to look beyond the walls, beyond the labels, and beyond the worst thing a person has done—to consider what else might still be possible.
