Abington Art Center is a community center focused on music, drawing, painting, oil, ceramics, metals, sewing, embroidery, pottery, and jewelry classes. It is an outdoor free concert venue, with theater, dance, jazz, and live music on stage. You can buy gifts, crafts, bracelets, necklaces, and rings at the unique holiday fair.

Our Spring Session is broken up into two blocks of 3-5 week workshops. Some classes will run longer. Please read the course descriptions carefully and use the portal below to register.

Still Life Oil Painting

Based on Studio Incamminati’s approach to studying color, students will learn the basic principles of color: value, hue, temperature and intensity. Beginning with simple color blocks or objects, students will learn to mix color directly on the canvas with palette knife allowing the focus to be on color rather than draftsmanship. Students will be guided on how to “paint what you see, not your preconceived notions of color relationships.” Students will progress to painting a still life arrangement of objects with simple shapes and surfaces, such as ceramic crockery, undecorated bowls and fruit.

So you earned a degree in the arts, or want to turn your artistic hobby into something that can earn income…now what? Instructor Amy Scheidegger will cover all the freelance artist lessons she earned stumbling through a by-accident freelance career as a graphic designer and illustrator for the last 15 years. For artists of all kinds, this 4 week course will cover the vital responsibilities of a self-employed freelance artist.

Introduction to Printmaking

Introduction to printmaking is designed for any entry level student. Projects are designed to allow students to explore and demonstrate an understanding of printmaking’s history and several of its core methods. Projects will stress the technical aspects of creating an edition as well as support of the conceptual conversation of each student’s practice. Students will learn to properly use printmaking vocabulary, and will generate multi-state editions as a part of their research.

Variations on Chain Maille

Chain maille is formed by weaving together small metal links in a pattern to create mesh. In this class we will create 3 different seven or eight inch bracelets in the Byzantine, Full Persian 6 in 1 and Spiral (or Rope) patterns. The final class will focus on creating terminals and clasps.

Join fellow paper enthusiasts and work with the instructor who will guide you through the papermaking process at your own pace. Pulp and most of the needed equipment will be provided. Materials fee payable to instructor the day of class.

This class is the day of class, at AAC. Students must sign up for two classes or more at a time. Payment is due upon arrival.

A graphic printmaking medium using a variety of sharp tools to incise plastic sheets with varying lines and marks which will hold ink and transfer an image onto paper. The resulting print has a soft velvety quality.

Explore the outdoor gardens at AAC selecting natural elements for in depth study in both drawing and paint. Begin to understand form and shape to create drawings with depth using value. Mix a palette to add color with watercolor paints using organic subject matter. Color and composition will be a focus while allowing for individual expression. All levels are welcomed.

Enjoy the fresh air and sunshine while painting the grounds of Abington Art Center. Work with acrylic, oil or watercolor, and we can guide you to paint an image depicting the sweeping vistas and woods from the terrace or the perfect location that you choose.
