The HandMaking
April 14 through July 28, 2007
The HandMaking, which features 22 contemporary artists who appropriate skills from traditional crafts and forgotten domestic trades, is a timely exhibition that is tapping into a larger artworld trend. Curated by Amy Lipton (Abington Art Center, curator) and Joele Cuyler (creative director at Modern Painters magazine). The HandMaking includes:
Polly Apfelbaum • Michael Manuel Barndt • Nancy Bauch • Susie Brandt •
Margarita Cabrera • Francis Cape • Nick Cave • Jody Culkin •
Elizabeth Demaray • Kimberley Hart • Jim Isermann • Maira Kalman •
Larry Krone • Virgil Marti • Meridith McNeal • Annette Monnier •
Elizabeth Lundberg Morisette • Christy Rupp • Tucker Schwarz • Lee Stoetzel •
Daina Taimina • Andrea Zittel
Lipton and Cuyler conceptualized this exhibit while Cuyler was working as art director at Martha Stewart Living magazine. The HandMaking reflects on the popularization of do-it-yourself domestic arts and crafts.
