A genuine artist

One of the first rooms of the exhibit featured a glass box of selected pieces from his Fall/Winter 2010-11 collection, which was inspired by the art of Flemish masters and Tudor and Jacobean portraiture. Gowns featured prints of Renaissance paintings and themes in gold and silver tones. Furthermore, the shoes were not simply footwear but sculptures with angel figures as the heels!

Alexander McQueen was not a fashion designer but a genuine artist. I personally loved how the exhibit presented McQueen in this way by talking about him as a Romantic artist.  The galleries transitioned from Romantic Gothic (“[In this collection,] my idea was this mad scientist who cut all these women up and mixed them all back together”) to Romantic Naturalism (“I’m inspired by a feather but also its color, its graphics, its weightlessness and its engineering. In fact I try and transpose the beauty of a bird to women”), with the setup and design of each room supplementing McQueen’s masterpieces.

My favorite pieces in the exhibit were from McQueen’s final collection before his death: Plato’s Atlantis from Spring/Summer 2010. The short frocks on display were made of reptile skin prints ranging from browns, yellows, and greens to hypnotizing shades of blue. The overall effect was very futuristic and extraterrestrial, especially paired with McQueen’s controversial platform booties that transformed the mannequins’ legs into claws from grab machine games.

As a fan of fashion, this exhibit was really special because I was close enough to the garments to appreciate the little details. That’s why you go to a museum, isn’t it? Why look at a van Gogh on a flat computer screen when seeing the texture and thickness of the brushstrokes in person gives you another outlook and appreciation for the work. Before seeing Savage Beauty, I had seen pictures of some of McQueen’s collections in magazines and online and I thought they were just beautiful, without putting more thought into it. In person, I was able to learn about the ideas behind the collections and I have gained so much more reverence for Alexander McQueen as an artist and thinker. His clothes weren’t simply meant to empower the women who wore them, but to reveal a concept or theme that was carefully presented through the fabrics, fashion shows, and the collection’s name. For example, McQueen’s Fall/Winter 1995-96 collection, entitled Highland Rape, featured tartan plaid as a tribute to McQueen’s Scottish heritage. The garments were also ripped in places as if by wolves to express the wrong that England has done to Scotland over their long and bloody history.

Just as paintings by old masters continue to be studied today, McQueen’s art will never go out of fashion.

  16. Being an entrepreneur is the new art form. Many of use are opting to represent ourselves with what we create by rather than what we consume. Is this a shift in the way the world functions? The same goes for art now, with sales possible online, almost anyone can be a creator rather than just a passive buyer.
